Washington. DC. - El telescopio espacial Hubble descubrió dióxido de carbono (CO2) y monóxido de carbono (CO) en la atmósfera de un planeta a 63 años luz de la Tierra, lo cual marca un paso en la búsqueda de vida extraterrestre, según informó la agencia espacial estadounidense NASA.
Estos compuestos fueron hallados en un planeta del tamaño de Júpiter a 63 años luz de la Tierra, formado de gases y líquidos y demasiado caliente para alojar vida tal como la conocemos.
Los compuestos orgánicos pueden ser consecuencia de procesos de vida, y si fueran detectados en una planeta similar a la Tierra podría "proveer la primera evidencia de vida más allá de nuestro planeta", indicó la NASA en un comunicado el martes.
"No estamos cerca de descubrir vida en este planeta en particular", admitió Ray Villard de Instituto científico del telescopio espacial. "Pero tiene la mezcla química que en un planeta adecuado podría suponer trazas de vida".
El CO2 y el CO fueron hallados por Mark Swain, un investigador del Jet Propulsion Laboratory de la NASA en California (oeste), a través del Hubble, que orbita a 575 km sobre la Tierra.
"El dióxido de carbono es el principal motivo de entusiasmo porque bajo las circunstancias correctas podría tener una vinculación con actividad biológica como sucede en la Tierra", dijo Swain.
Lanzado hace 18 años, el telescopio espacial revolucionó la astronomía gracias a su habilidad de escudriñar el universo, devolviendo imágenes libres de las distorsiones que genera la atmósfera terrestre.
Un año luz es la distancia que recorre la luz en el vacío durante un año.
