WASHINGTON - La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA) informó que cambiará su política sobre el uso de la llamada "píldora del día siguiente" para que las adolescentes de 17 años puedan usarla sin prescripción médica. La FDA señaló este miércoles que no apelará la orden de un juez federal que desechó las restricciones impuestas a esa píldora anticonceptiva durante el gobierno del ex presidente George W. Bush. El mes pasado, el juez federal de distrito Edward Korman emitió su fallo en una demanda presentada en Nueva York y señaló que los funcionarios designados por el gobierno de Bush dejaron que la política, y no la ciencia, dictase su decisión sobre el acceso sin necesidad de prescripción sólo para las mujeres de 18 años o mayores. Korman ordenó que la agencia permita a las adolescentes de 17 años obtener las píldoras y que por otra parte que se evalúe si las restricciones sobre edades deberían ser anuladas. En un comunicado, la FDA indicó que está dispuesta a aprobar el cambio una vez que el fabricante lo solicite. Las píldoras del día siguiente son un método anticonceptivo de emergencia que contiene una alta dosis de drogas para el control natal, pero no pueden evitar un embarazo que ya esté en curso. Los conservadores religiosos indican que son el equivalente a una píldora de aborto porque pueden evitar que un óvulo fecundado se adhiera al útero. La batalla sobre el libre acceso a las píldoras del día siguiente se ha desarrollado durante gran parte de la década y en diferentes gestiones de la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA por sus siglas en inglés). Entre gran parte de la comunidad médica se convirtió en un símbolo de la decadencia de la ciencia en la dependencia oficial. Los más altos funcionarios de la FDA se negaron a seguir las recomendaciones de un grupo de científicos y negaron que la píldora se pusiese a disposición de las mujeres sin restricción de edad. "La FDA quedó atrapada en una telenovela; quedó atrapada en un drama," dijo Susan Wood, que fungió como la más importante funcionaria para la salud de la mujer en la dependencia y renunció en el 2005 ante los retrasos para emitir una decisión.
