WASHINGTON, 19 nov.- Legisladores demócratas y republicanos sostuvieron este jueves un encendido debate sobre la posibilidad de levantar las restricciones de viajes a Cuba para los estadounidenses, que han sido mantenidas casi sin interrupción desde hace poco menos de medio siglo. La discusión en la Comisión de Relaciones Exteriores de la Cámara de Repesentantes tiene como telón de fondo un proyecto de ley que permitiría a todos los estadounidenses viajar a la isla. “Este es el único país del mundo donde a nuestra población no se le permite ir”, señaló el presidente de la comisión, el demócrata Howard Berman (California). “Bajo cualquier perspectiva, la prohibición vigente desde hace casi 50 años simplemente no ha funcionado”, dijo Berman. “La prohibición a los viajes no es una sanción a Cuba, es una sanción a los estadounidenses impuesta por nuestro propio gobierno”, estimó el demócrata Bill Delahunt (Massachusets). Los impulsores del proyecto de ley en la Cámara (435 escaños) afirman que cuentan con el respaldo de más de 200 legisladores, tanto demócratas como republicanos. (Florida), defendió las restricciones a los viajes, vigentes desde 1963, salvo de 1977 a 1982, cuando el presidente Jimmy Carter las levantó. La legisladora cubanoestadounidense fustigó la posibilidad de “recompensar al régimen de Cuba con turismo y dinero”. Los republicanos aseguran que los demócratas no tienen los votos suficientes para aprobar la ley, y que esta fracasará tal y como pasó con iniciativas similares anteriores, en un Congreso muy sensible al tema de Cuba. Cuba “no es una amenaza para nuestra seguridad” y “levantar la prohibición a los viajes serviría a nuestros intereses”, indicó el ex jefe antidrogas de Estados Unidos, Barry McCaffrey, uno de los testigos invitados a la audiencia de este jueves.barrigaverde
